In 1953 a group of GSD enthusiasts got together and put their money in, in order to fund the beginnings of the ‘West Yorkshire Alsatian Club’! Out of the original 25, the only founder member still able to be active in the club today is Alan Burnett. To this day Alan still takes a very keen interest in the club.
The club held it’s first Championship show in 1975 at the showground in Harrogate where one was held annually thereafter. At this time there was again a lot of dedicated, hardworking people involved, contributing to the club’s success around this time.
In the 1980’s the then secretary ‘David Banyard’ proposed the merit medal award. The merit medal is presented to members of the club who breed a Champion. I believe West Yorkshire is the only club to present such an award. Needless to say the award is extremely highly regarded.
The present Chairman is ‘Terry Hannan’ with his wife ‘Lily’ (Jonimay) being Treasurer. They have been on the committee for over 20 years and anyone who knows them will know that they are well and truly dedicated people, committed to the breed.
Looking back through the history books of West Yorkshire GSD Club it doesn’t surprise me that it is such a successful club. Since, what is obvious, is that over the years they have been lucky enough to have had the cream of GSD enthusiasts involved, all working very hard with true dedication for the well being, and their love of, the GSD breed in general.
The present committee are listed below. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them the very best of luck, going on past committee members, they’ll need it for they have an awful lot to live up to!
